Judge reinstates Aurora pit bull ban, says 2021 city council repeal was ‘without authority’
Aurora residents are once again forbidden from owning pit bulls, after a district court judge ruled this week that the Aurora City Council’s decision in 2021 to repeal a ban on the dog breed defied the will of voters.
In an email to the Sentinel, city spokesman Ryan Luby wrote that Aurora has not yet determined what enforcement of the ban might look like, what the ruling means for pit bull owners and whether the city will appeal.
Matt Snider, the Aurora resident and member of the city’s Civil Service Commission who independently filed the lawsuit against the city a few months after the ban was lifted, said the ruling gutted the argument that the former City Council could unilaterally get rid of the legislation that had been upheld by a ballot question in 2014

End Colorado bans on pit bulls and implement responsible breed-restricted permitting.
End Castle Rock BSL led by Jen Dudley successfully lifted breed legislation in Castle Rock in 2018, setting the stage for change across Colorado.
Fort Lupton followed suit in 2019, joining the movement to end breed-specific legislation.
in 2020, Denver replaced their ban with a better law that makes it possible for someone to have a pit bull type dog in Denver. Thanks to Replace Denver BSL's perseverance.
On January 2021, the Aurora City Council agreed to lift the city's restricted breed ordinance in a final vote of 7-3, thanks to the efforts of End Aurora BSL.
Less than a week later, Commerce City joined Aurora, Denver, and Castle Rock in lifting their breed-specific bans, showing the growing trend towards ending discrimination against certain breeds.

Breed Specific Legislation or BSL, is probably responsible for more killing of healthy treatable dogs in Colorado than any other single reason.
In order to become a true No Kill state, BSL must be repealed in the 3 communities in Colorado where it still exists:
Aurora<—Repealed! 2021
CastleRock<—-Repealed 2018!
Commerce City<—Repealed 2021!
Denver<— Repealed 2020!
Fort upton<— Repealed 2019!
La Junta
Lone Tree<— Repealed 2021!

The New BSL permitting rules for Denver Colorado
Effective immediately, all pit bull owners and adopters must contact DAP to schedule an appointment for a restricted-breed assessment. Assessments will take 30-45 minutes and will be conducted by DAP at the Denver Animal Shelter. The assessment fee is $25 per dog and is non-refundable. No owner or keeper of any pit bull may own or keep more than two pit bulls per household.
The application process for a Breed-Restricted Permit to own or keep a pit bull will require the following:
Name and address of the owner or keeper where the pit bull will be located
Names and addresses of two people who may be contacted in the event of an emergency involving the pit bull
An accurate description of the pit bull and recent photograph
Payment of the $30 Breed-Restricted Permit fee (this is in addition to the $25 assessment fee)
Proof the dog is neutered or spayed, or proof of a DAP intact permit that allows the dog to remain unaltered
Proof that the animal has had a registered microchip implanted
Proof that the animal has a current rabies vaccination
Proof that the animal has a city license (Do not license through PetData. A pit bull license can only be issued at the time the Breed-Restricted Permit is approved.)
Any other information that DAP reasonably requires
The fee for the permit is $30 per animal, and it must be renewed every year for 3 years (at $30 per animal per year). If there are no violations* within that time period, Breed-Restricted Permit holders may request to be removed from Breed-Restricted requirements.
